The last decades have brought great changes in the daily life- and eating habits. Incomplete nourishment, more stress, and reduction of outdoor activities have a direct correlation with the decline of vitamin D levels.
We work more indoors, travel by car or train, work out indoors. Computergames and copious TV channels keep us (and our children) indoors. Doctors and dermatologists recommend the avoidance of direct sunlight to the skin as much as possible, and we wear clothing that covers 95% of our body. Artificial light, or light that has passed through glass does not produce Vitamin D3 in the body. Washing the skin with soap can also cause a great loss of Vitamin D - Our inclination towards hygiene has it's price. An interesting detail is that recent research shows that the population of sunny Miami shows great vitamin D deficiencies.
